Demolition is not a friendly word when it comes to historic preservation, however, sometimes it's unavoidable.  When those cases arise, Cedar Rapids Historic Commission will do photo documentation of that property to preserve that building in print.  Salvage where applicable is always of great importance for both exterior and interior details and several groups as well as the city of Cedar Rapids work together before the demolition takes place.  This salvage process is extremely important as much of the artifacts can no longer be made.  Much of the wood salvaged is no longer available and the creation process for the ornamental pieces has gotten too costly to produce  There are several architectural salvage resale areas in the corridor.  So before buying new, shop at the following salvage resale stores. They will have a large array of items that may fit your preservation needs.
